    Inspired by Books Ceramic Design

Maha Al-Sulaiti is a skilled ceramic artist who specializes in throwing using earthenware clay. Maha joined Qatar Youth Creative Arts Center to study ceramics under the famous Iraqi ceramist and painter Waleed R. Qaisi. Maha has visited the Museum of Islamic Art many times and been inspired by both the ceramic objects and the books in the MIA Library.

Using the Library and collection to find inspiration

Maha came to the MIA library and began researching into the books available on ceramics and glazes. She was inspired by several books, especially those talking about old traditional techniques such as:Ideqqi : art de femmes berbères by Marie-France Vivier NK4174.6.A1 I34 2007, 10,000 years of pottery by Emmanuel Cooper NK3780 .C66 2010 and Luster by Greg Daly NK4600 .D35 2012

Create the design

Maha has developed her throwing design through her training with Waleed, but she was trying to think of the best method for glazing her pots. She wanted to do research into this topic to understand what were some of the traditional Islamic glazes and to think about the best colours to use for her work.

The Finished product

Maha will have an exhibition of more than 30 of her pots at the gallery space at the Youth Creative Art Center at the end of February 2014/beginning of March 2014. This will be the first solo exhibition of her work.
