Enamelled Glass Bucket

Egypt or Syria, mid 14th century

It contains cool water...

With only four other Mamluk enamelled glass buckets known to exist this is a true rarity, though much of the technical and stylistic methods are common in glass of this period.

The bucket may well have been used as a finger‐bowl to rinse hands before and after meals, as suggested by the inscription around the middle: "I am a toy for the hands/ and I contain cool water."

Every design element on the bucket can be found on other pieces of enamelled glass, from the thick treatment of the enamels to the details of the motifs.
