Gold and Glass

Syria (Raqqa), mid-12th century

This gilded blue flask was made in or near what is today the small Syrian city of Raqqa, situated on the Euphrates in the north-east of the country.

In the mid-12th century AD, the city was a thriving centre for the production of pottery and glass, constantly refreshed by the appearance of craftsmen leaving the ailing Fatimid Empire in search of opportunities further afield.

The gold was applied to the body of the bottle in thin sheets before the designs – birds flanking a pomegranate tree, evoking both earthly and heavenly gardens – were scratched in.
