    The Hunt Penbox

These three figurative roundels are featured on the lid of a brass pen box with gold and silver inlay. Dating from the mid-13th century, this pen box was produced in the regions of present day Syria or northern Iraq.

On this pen box an enthroned ruler is depicted in the central roundel, on a seat supported by birds. The roundels on either side of him show mounted lion-hunters, one of whom is fighting with a sword, and the other who hunts with bow and arrow. This typical combination of iconography directly links the ruler with hunting.
