Ottoman Damascus Ware Dish

Damascus ware - Iznik, Turkey, 16th century CE

The cool colours of the floral decoration, distinctive style and lavender pigment clearly shows this dish was produced for the Ottoman Empire in Iznik during the middle of the 16th century.

This period is considered to be one of the highlights of Iznik pottery production, with the skills of the ceramicists and the painters at their finest.

It is very different from the more formal floral arrangements which characterised the earlier Iznik pottery. It show experimentation with bolder compositions rendered in blues and violets.

Such pottery was highly prized by the members of the Ottoman court and the bourgeoisie.
